BIOGRAPHY

Fung Ka-fai was born in Hong Kong during the British colonial period. As a teenager, he began creating art while attending a church secondary school. After experiencing his family circumstances, he worked with a renovation craftsman at the age of 17 to pave his way to becoming an artist. In his youth, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Hong Kong Arts School and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). As an adult, he briefly studied in a classical oil painting workshop at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, later traveling to various countries to absorb diverse cultures. His main research focuses on symbols in Western culture, combining classical painting techniques with contemporary narrative concepts.

He was invited by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government to reside and exhibit at the Tainan Arts Festival. With funding from the Hong Kong government, he engaged in cultural exchanges at INSTINC in Singapore. Subsequently, he received commissions from the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Wheelock Properties (Hong Kong) Limited, and 480.0 for public art projects, exhibiting at Workshop52 with the support of the Pure Art Foundation. In recent years, he participated in group exhibitions for public and became an artist with Art Bridger, showcasing his work during Art March in Collect Hong Kong 2025 and creating art at Soho House Hong Kong.

Fung's work often features symbolic imagery from Western culture and history, with narratives woven throughout. He sometimes creates paintings on panels, paper or canvas, which have become a distinctive part of his classical-style triptych installations. The symbols he chooses carry specific meanings, reflecting memories of Western cultural power, commentary on social issues, and themes of psychology, struggle, and cultural evolution. Given the varying cultural perspectives and sensibilities of viewers, his works are sometimes open to different interpretations, or even misinterpreted as ambiguous images. In this state, he and his artworks are going towards the commercial art market.
