Participating artists Scott CHAN | FUNG Ka Fai | Elaine WONG | Ivy YUEN Curator

Ivy YUEN Curatorial statementImages of the outside are being cast onto the inside of a black box through a small hole - this is what the four artists are experiencing - the absorption of the outside in them.In 2016, the group made a trip to Singapore for a residency program, where they held their first joint exhibition From Inside of the Outside. During the residency, they explored and experienced the city’s culture. Back to the fast-paced daily life in Hong Kong, the artists live with a renewed perspective. In 2017, the team reflects their ‘inner conditions’ in a place they live as insiders.In the exhibition From Outside of the Inside, the two male artists, Scott CHAN & Sam FUNG reflect their state of minds with their gentle and meticulous hearts. Inspired by his experience with the autism children when he works in the charity organisation, Sam investigates our city’s social values, the sort of happiness people look for, and how people value and are valued?As a potter, Scott thinks about how he is being shaped by the countless comments and standards of the society. He attempts to reshape himself and experiment with the alternatives through mountain-climbing, while he collects soil along the way as material for his hand-build works.The females of the group, Elaine WONG and Ivy YUEN, question their surroundings with exceptional logics and calmness. Ivy is attracted to and tries to trace the footprint of a specific genre of local pine tree she discovered from the hundred years of historical record of Hong Kong’s botanical and forestry reports. These trees were once dominant, however they are disappearing. Media artist Elaine is fascinated by the storm glass she purchased from a gift shop, the idea of forecasting the ever-changing future with fragile substances inside the storm glass inspired her to build her own digital forecast system.From Outside of the Inside reflects the countless encounters, overlapped experiences and unconscious emotions of the artists on the island, a city they called home.
